In 1981, a 20-year-old college student named Nelly Sheehan made a swimsuit for herself — and her seven sisters immediately wanted one too. That's when she realized women aren't built proportionately top and bottom.
Nelly pioneered the mix-and-match concept, selling tops and bottoms as separates. She incorporated that year, opened her first store on Main Street Hyannis, expanded to the Cape Cod Mall, and at her peak ran five stores across the Cape.
Today, after 15 years at this Hyannis location, Nelly still works the floor every day. Her daughter Skylar now runs Summer Sky Swimwear in Mashpee Commons.
